drivetrain rebuild and other changes   2 comments

As mentioned in my last post there were quite a few little changes afoot the week before Sunday’s ramble. I was trying to hold off until after the end of the year to fix everything up, but since I’ve been riding the trucker more, stuff just wears out.

wheel build final   Leave a comment

%#$@%* The last stress relieve cycle took FOREVER. By round 3 I had the spoke tension on each side balanced to within 5%, radially within tolerance and only 0.02″ off on lateral. Then there was the dish. As usual I screwed it up by dishing in the wrong direction and compounding the error 2 rounds [...]

Yet another ‘first wheel build’ story   3 comments

Mostly Pictures as I don’t have too much original to write about the process. This is purely a case of ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’. Only thing I ‘invented’ on my own was building an armature to hang the hub from the basement ceiling so I could work standing up rather than trying to [...]

Mechanical Updates   Leave a comment

Aside from running errands around town I didn’t feel motivated to ride at all this weekend. What I DID want to do was get a bunch of chores finished around the house to free up other days for more fun things and try to hash out a kernel of an idea I had for a [...]

Volunteer Work – 2010   Leave a comment

Every year I get the chance to do some volunteer work for a camp up in Millville for kids with ventilator dependencies.  Basically I set up my tent and then run around building sets/props/taking out trash/running errands/etc… for a few days until I’m about to fall over, then go home and work the next day. [...]

Ostrich Saddlebag r3   1 comment

After the last post I started to look at the bag again and think of how to improve on the structure. Sometimes, even when things work well enough for my purposes, I still feel an obligation to mess with it until I find some solution which is so good that I can honestly say “This [...]

I’ve been low on prose lately. Made a few modifications a while back, but haven’t had the chance to journal them yet. First thing’s first, The saddlebag mount worked pretty well from the very beginning, but the carbon handlebar didn’t work at all. Within a week the force of the skewer clamping and the torque [...]

Kids, don't try this at home…   3 comments

I finally broke down and ordered a saddlebag for my bike. Since I tore the LHT down, rebuilt it, and judiciously applied framesaver during the January break, I’m back to using it as my main bike a little early thanks to the mild winter and the minimum of salt they have spread on the roads [...]
